 For many, times are tough.

People across the country who were receiving $600 extra a week in unemployment benefits because of job loss related to Covid-19 are no longer receiving them. That’s $2,400 less a month to pay bills.

Some other folks were between jobs, have their own businesses or were not eligible for unemployment benefits to begin with and have been feeling the economic effects of the coronavirus for a while now.

Either way, finances are tight for many, and uncertain for many more.

Here at NeighborWorks of Grays Harbor, one of the free services we offer is help with budgeting. (We are also housing experts and may be able to help you sort through your housing options. We know of various programs that are available depending on an individual’s or family’s circumstances.)

Today we will offer some basics on successful budgeting and how to make your dollar stretch. In addition, we’d like you to know that Julie Galligan, our housing counselor, is also an expert in helping indiv...

The devastating economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic are hitting hard here in Grays Harbor County, affecting each of our lives each day.

Even many folks who had a bit of an emergency fund for a financial buffer are beginning to find themselves in a difficult situation as unemployment soars, businesses close and many organizations are forced to go on hiatus.

Can’t pay your bills?

So, what do you do if you can’t pay your bills?

Today we’re talking with Julie Galligan our housing counselor here at NeighborWorks of Grays Harbor. She’s working hard to keep up with all the latest COVID-19 related financial programs and has many very practical tips.

“The recession of 2008 was very difficult,” said Julie, “but what we are experiencing now is on a whole other level. This is just wiping everything out economically from the bottom to the top. It’s a whole different economic crash.”

Before we get into some details of what you can do, we want you to hear her over-arching advice for those who are...

With Thanksgiving falling later this year and December well underway, we hope we’re not too late with this warning: Don’t blow your household budget at Christmas! Even if you did spend your wad during the Black Friday sales, take a deep breath now and assess your financial situation.

Generosity is great! However, if you give at the detriment of your financial stability, in the end that’s no gift to anyone! We see it time and again the negative affects of overspending at Christmas. It leads to unpaid mortgages, rents, heating bills, credit card bills and car loans come January. That’s why we want to encourage everyone to be wise with their money and to also shop locally whenever possible.

While shopping online is quick and easy, going to local stores and sellers can provide unique gifts and often superior customer service! Think creative and local!

For instance, what about buying someone a gift certificate to a local restaurant? Someone else on your list might appreciate a service such as...

Do you need financing at a time and interest rate you can afford – and some expertise that is free of charge – to buy your first house? We’d love to help! Here at NeighborWorks of Grays Harbor we wear many hats. But, as a not-for-profit organization all of our roles are to help the people of Grays Harbor.

In fact, the mission of NeighborWorks of Grays Harbor County is to develop partnerships in the community between business, government, and residents to create safe and affordable housing opportunities for all residents of Grays Harbor County.

One of the major ways we do that is to encourage, support and facilitate home ownership. Studies – and experience – have proven that home ownership helps stabilize and strengthen communities.

We can actually help make your dream of home ownership a reality. For starters, we have money available to loan to first-time homebuyers – up to 100 percent of the cost of the home including closing costs sometimes!  And, now is...

Every so often we like to pause and try to give an overview of all the various aspects of what we do here at NeighborWorks of Grays Harbor County. (With the idea that maybe you will find something we can help you with!)

In 1981, we became officially affiliated with a nationwide organization originally known as Neighborhood Reinvestment, an organization created by Congress to address Lenders not loaning on houses in certain areas called “Red lining.” There were also so many more needs of low income, blighted communities suffering from the effects of deteriorating housing.

Now it is called NeighborWorks America and NeighborWorks of Grays Harbor County is one of the oldest chartered organizations of nearly 250 located in every state and possession.

In a nutshell, our volunteer board and our staff are very committed to providing decent, safe and affordable housing opportunities for the Grays Harbor community. We want you to know about all the different programs and areas of expertise we can p...

Are you still eating turkey sandwiches at your house? We hope you enjoyed a particularly satisfying Thanksgiving with friends and family. There is a bit of irony, isn’t there, that in America in our rush to buy gifts for Christmas, taking time to be grateful gets short shrift!

Christmas and the rest of the holiday season is a wonderful time and we don’t want to sound like Scrooge.  However, after years of helping people with budgets and difficult financial situations, over and over again we have seen that overspending at the holidays can make for some pretty tight budgets come January and February.

In fact, sometimes it’s the big splurge during the holidays that means a family goes into the debt abyss and can spend months or years climbing out. With “Black Friday” yesterday, we hope we aren’t getting to you too late!

As we all know, money doesn’t equal happiness. Of course, the same goes for expensive gifts.  And while it’s out of a generous heart...
